「～と思っていたが・もともと～」 — 思いとは反対の「結果になる・何かが起こった」を表す8種類の構文

過去に実現していない考えや思いを示す — 「～と思っていたが・～のつもりだったが・もともと～」と言う。思いとは反対の「結果になる・何かが起こった」。

このような「過去に実現していない考えや思い」を示す方法は数多くある。
8種類ほど書き留める。

過去進行形を使用する

They were coming to see you, but it rained (so they didn’t).
彼らはあなたに会いに来るつもりだが、雨が降ってきた。

We were trying to help but We screwed up again.
私たちは助けようとしたが、かえって事を台無しにしてしまった。

Why didn’t you come to the meeting?
どうして会議に参加しないの?

We were going to, but We caught a bad cold.
私たちは来たかったが、ひどい風邪を引いた。

He was going to attend the concert last night, but he was too busy.
彼は昨夜コンサートに行きたかったが、とても忙しかった。

We had intended to speak, but time did not permit.
発言しようと思ったが、時間が許さなかった。

They had hoped that you would come to see them, but you didn’t.
彼らはあなたが会いに来ることを望んでいたが、あなたはそうしなかった。

We had meant to go on Thursday but have stayed on.
私たちは木曜日に行くつもりだが、滞在した。

I had thought to return early but they wouldn’t let me go.
私は早く帰りたいと思っていたが、彼らは私を行かせなかった。
